Adoption Movie Review #6 - Meet the Robinsons

A little while back we watched the movie Meet the Robinsons with my sister and her kids, and it was really interesting. It is the story of a brilliant little boy who was abandoned at the doorstep of an orphanage as an infant. As he's growing up he is turned down over and over again by adoptive parents, and struggles with not knowing who is birth mother is. He is visited by a boy from the future who (spoiler) turns out to be his son who is there to help him complete an invention that turns out to be instrumental in his life, and indeed the whole world (this is the big plot line--the adoption piece is a large but secondary plot). While an interesting story overall, I also felt it was a pretty good adoption story. It turns out that the boy is adopted by a teacher at his school, and has a wonderful family life. He apparently later marries his childhood sweetheart and they have a son (the one who travels back in time). He realizes in the end that he DOES have a wonderful family (both his adoptive parents and the family he creates), and that is all he needs. He does go back in time at one point and sees his birthmother leaving him on the orphanage doorstep, but decides not to interfere by seeing or face or trying to talk to her. That part was a little odd--it almost seemed like a message that you shouldn't seek out your birthparents because you already have a happy family?  Other than that, though, I would indeed recommend it as a good story for kids who have been adopted.
