Tsunami orphans

I've been asked a lot about whether our adoption will be affected by the recent tragedies in Japan.  The official stance of our agency is basically "the future is impossible to predict," but at least we've been told that the Tokyo agency staff is fine and we haven't heard that the organization has needed to close their office or anything like that.  We also have not heard whether there will potentially be MORE babies available as a result of the tragedies or not.  My impressions are that as a DIRECT result, there are not likely to be any (check out this article on the topic: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2011-03-26/japans-tsunami-where-will-the-orphans-go/ ).  But, as a longer term effect of the devastation (ruined homes and businesses, economic difficulties, dealing with loss of family members), I could potentially foresee more pregnant women in the affected areas opting to relinquish babies instead of trying to raise them in what could be VERY difficult situations.  Whether such a change would be detectable and whether those babies would make it to our specific agency is very questionable. 

So, to sum things up, we have no idea if there will be a discernible effect or not.
